Thank you

You had such a big influence on my life and words can't express how grateful I am for it. From turning me in to a fully fledged Gooner, to giving me my first taste of European culture - you really were the most brilliant godmother.

Thank you, E x

I have many fond memories of Elspeth and our time together when I was growing up. Heading to London was always a big deal in itself, but she was kind enough to take me on my first trip to Paris, among other places. I remember her introducing me to French bread and chocolate as we sat on a wall, looking up at the Eiffel Tower.
Berlin came a couple of years later, where I saw her strength and courage - standing up to injustice in the form of an unforgiving train conductor. We laughed about dodging the 80 Deutschmark fine over dinner at the top of the TV Tower.
She also took me to Venice where we enjoyed a gondola ride and ice cream in St Mark's Square. I still have the duck ornament she got me when we experienced glass-blowing in Murano.
My most vivid memory of Elspeth, the one which will stick with me forever, is of her excitedly jumping over a baby gate and bouncing around with satisfaction. Aside from the fantastic trips to Europe, we occasionally went sightseeing in London. One such time, she drove me back up to Hull and it was here she randomly hopped over the gate. My mother and I looked at each other curiously and asked what had gotten into her:
"I've wanted to do that all week after seeing so many people jumping the ticket gates on the tube!"
There are great memories from her home too: playing 'Kerby' out on the road, taking Jasper for long walks and one particular time we were sitting in the garden eating Spanish omelette - I remember the joy on her face when Matt popped in to introduce his new girlfriend, Jemma.
I know she would have been excited to hear about the house I recently moved in to and that I got engaged to an amazing woman over Christmas. I'd have loved for her to be at our wedding.
At least I can look back fondly and take pride in knowing how happy she would have been for me.
Rest peacefully, Elspeth.
