Paolo Roncarati 20th December 2020

Matt, John and Nick, as you all know, I will remember Elspeth as my surrogate mum and your house as my second home. Although our lives have drifted in different directions and we have seen less of each other, I was lucky to be able to keep seeing Elspeth infrequently but enough for her amazingly relaxed and tolerant attitude and lovely white hair to have made a distinct and positive impression on both my children (Giacomo and Elena) and my wife (Caroline). Caroline reminded me of the time we popped over to see Elspeth with the kids (Giacomo was 4 and Elena 2 years old) 15 years ago. The children were left playing in the long living room while we chatted and moved from the kitchen to the living room and back, children playing nicely under the coffee table. When we were leaving, we realised that Giacomo, who had been an exemplary child till then, had shredded Elspeth’s thin cork coasters. We were mortified, but Elspeth had a way of letting the kids know that what they had done was not right but it was not a problem, even though I believe they had held some sentimental value! How could she be like that! Many times, you (Matthew) and I would be running in and out the house, jumping onto skateboards and racing down the road sat on them, while John was in his room with his air pistol and Nick doing some electronics project, chaos but Elspeth was always calm happy and the provider, even through her own tough times! What an amazing woman! I am grateful to have spent an hour with you all by her side and will always remember her with great fondness. I will also remember what an amazing unit you three were supporting her over the last few years and I will hold you all up as an example of how a family unit should be. May she rest in peace with all our love. Paolo, Caroline, Giacomo and Elena.
