My London Cousin

My most precious memories of Elspeth come from childhood times when she would meet me off the overnight train from Scotland and look after me in the hours before the ‘school train’ left in mid-afternoon.  These hours in London were very special and exciting.  We went to Harrods, museums and beautiful parks.  I particularly remember one of the severest winters on record (1963) when temperatures dropped to -22C.  The school pipes burst and the drains froze.  Even the sea froze on the south coast that year.  I stayed with Fiona in Newbury for two weeks waiting for the school to open.  We went for snowy walks in a magical white landscape with amazing icicles suspended from roofs and trees.  Elspeth took me to the local cinema to see ‘Summer Holiday’ starring Cliff Richard - a splash of warmth and fun and a huge treat.  She was so kind to me, my older, lovely, London cousin. Thank you, Elspeth.
